Gilead Public Health Award in Viral Hepatitis

Award Announcement

The purpose of the Gilead Public Health Award (GPHA) in Viral Hepatitis is to foster innovative scientific research that will advance knowledge about the prevention, care and treatment of viral hepatitis, and support the career development of early stage researchers from low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Selection Criteria

Gilead encourages proposals that demonstrate:

  • Clear alignment with an area of health priority and scientific importance to the LMIC
  • Relevancy to the applicant’s career objectives
  • Specific, measurable and realistic objectives and steps required to meet research and career development goals

Eligibility

  • This award is intended for junior faculty or post-doctoral students who hold an M.D., D.O., Ph.D, or equivalent degree at time of award
  • Applicants must be employed at an academic or research institution in eligible countries in Africa, Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and certain Commonwealth of Independent States countries (for the full list of eligible countries, download the program document)
  • Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the nation and/or state where they plan to conduct the research

Scientific Focus

Applicants can propose an exploratory project and/or an existing funded project that addresses critical areas of research including:

  • Viral hepatitis prevention, treatment and management
  • Viral hepatitis and its complications in vulnerable and/or under-researched LMIC populations (children, aging, women, transgendered, drug and alcohol users, etc.)
  • Viral hepatitis and co-morbidities
  • Health economics outcomes research related to viral hepatitis
  • Community-based intervention models across the continuum of care

  • Gilead accepts applications on a rolling basis. Gilead will communicate decisions quarterly and announce awards at international or regional meetings and events

Program Specifics

  • The Award provides financial support to the institution of the junior faculty or post-doctoral student for a two-year period
  • Funding for the second year is contingent upon submission of a progress report by each researcher and approval by the internal Gilead Review Committee
